Actor. Born Alexander Rae Baldwin III, on April 3, 1958, in Amityville, New York, educated at George Washington University (political science); NYU (drama). Star of Hollywood films. The second of six children, he was raised in Massapequa, Long Island, where his father taught high school. Had intended to become a lawyer and a politician, but was drawn to acting and trained at Lee Strasberg's Theater. He began his professional career in New York, performing in the TV soap opera "The Doctors" by day and on the stage, in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream", by night. Having gained additional experience on TV ("Knots Landing", etc.) and on the stage (an award-winning performance in a revival of "Loot" among other roles), he made his film debut in 1987. Good-looking, gifted, and versatile, he rapidly joined the ranks of Hollywood's most sought-after screen personalities. In 1992, he gave up the chance to star in Patriot Games, the sequel to The Hunt for Red October, due to a schedule conflict that would have kept him from playing Stanley Kowalski in a Broadway revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire". Brother of actors William Baldwin and Stephen and Daniel Baldwin. Married to actress Kim Basinger, with whom he starred in The Marrying Man and The Getaway.
