During a 13 hour shooting day, Carrey (known for his roles in "Ace Ventura," "Liar Liar" and "The Truman Show") wanted to do a scene with "The King" in which the superstar would suplex and piledrive the actor-as Lawler had actually done to Andy Kaufman 16 years ago. According to people on the set, Carrey is so consumed by his portrayal of the late comedian that he refuses to answer to any thing other than "Mr. Kaufman" or "Andy."
According to the source, the actor wanted to do his own stunts, but was prohibited by the Executive Producer, the Director and the bonding and insurance companies. In spite of the guidelines, our source said Carrey verbally berated Lawler in the ring, claiming that he could do his own stunts if he wanted to.
The Memphis legend respectfully adhered to the instructions and opted not to wrestle his co-star. Carrey continued to berate him to the point until the King had enough and began to walk out of the squared circle. The actor then shoved Jerry from behind, and Lawler responded with a warning that Carrey was going too far and should watch himself.
Next, our source said Carrey spit in Lawler's eye-which resulted in the King grabbing his co-star and restraining him with a reverse chin lock. During the confrontation, the actor apparently injured himself and was taken to California Hospital in downtown Los Angeles complaining of neck pains. The Director and Executive Producer are extremely sympathetic to the King and both have apologized for Carrey's actions. The comedian checked himself out late Tuesday night.
Since 7:45 a.m. (9/25/98) this morning, news helicopters and cameras are surrounding the Le Montrose Hotel in Los Angeles, where the cast and crew of "Man On The Moon" are staying. WWF.COM will have further details on this situation as soon as we are able to speak with Lawler!
