Actor. Born on March 14, 1947, in Long Beach, New York, educated at Marshall University; NYU Film School. Popular comedian and leading man. The son of a jazz concert producer and a nephew of a record manufacturer, he grew up in a show business atmosphere and began touring coffee houses and college campuses as a stand-up comedian at a young age. He gained popularity on TV talk shows, then scored his first success portraying a gay youth in the hit comedy series "Soap" (1977-1981). His popularity increased after a season (1984-1985) on "Saturday Night Live". He established himself as a romantic lead in When Harry Met Sally (1989) and became known to audiences worldwide as the host of several Oscar telecasts. He made his directorial debut with Mr. Saturday Night (1992).
