Actor. Born on July 22, 1947, in San Francisco, educated at San Francisco State. Likable, reliable, muscular character lead and supporting player of American films. Trained at the Black Actors Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater, he appeared in many stage productions before making his screen debut in the late 70s. He received much praise for his portrayal of a brutal pivotal character in Steven Spielberg's "The Color Purple" (1985), then veered toward engaging roles in "Lethal Weapon" (1987), its sequels, and other films, gaining star-level popularity through his strong presence and appealing personality.
