Actor. Born on February 11, 1922, in Regina, Saskatchewan., Canada. Tall, rugged leading man, then character player of American films and television. A Mountie's son, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II before starting a career as a radio announcer and disc jockey. On a scholarship to New York's Neighborhood Playhouse, he studied acting with Sanford Meisner and dance with Martha Graham, then performed on stage and early TV before making his film debut in the mid-50's. He played a wide mixture of leads and supporting roles, some blandly pleasant, some sneaky or manacing, but had his best success late in his career when he found his niche in broad comedy in such films as Airplane! And Naked Gun. His numerous TV appearances included starring roles in such series as "The New Breed" (1961-1962), "Peyton Place" (1965), "The Protectors" (1969-1970), "Bracken's World", "Police Squad" (1982), "Shaping Up" (1984), as well as many TV movies.
