Actor, singer, songwriter. Born on April 9, 1954, in Houston, Texas, educated at University of Houston. Amiably rakish lead of screen and stage. Son of an electrician, he followed brother Randy Quaid into acting. After gaining attention as the confused teenage cyclist in Breaking Away and the sweet-talking detective in The Big Easy, he has been cast in a variety of roles that showcase his easy physicality and ability to convey unplanned self-reflection. A musician with the rock band, The Electrics, he has portrayed musicians in several films and has composed songs for a number of his films. Formerly married to actress P.J. Soles; now married to Meg Ryan, whom he met on the set of Innerspace. They have a son, Jack.
