Actress. Born Winona Laura Horowitz, in October 1971, near Winona, Minnesota. Petite, intense, brunette young lead of Hollywood films, particularly adept at personifying the ambiguity of sophisticated innocence. The daughter of the archivist to LSD guru Timothy Leary (who is her godfather; Aldous Huxley was another friend of her parents who jointly edited a compilation of his essays), she moved with her family to Northern California at age four and spent part of her childhood in San Francisco and in a nearby hippie agricultural commune. At 11 she began training at San Francisco's prestigious American Conservatory Theater. On screen from age 15, she rapidly became one of the most sought-after young movie personalities. Overworked to near-exhaustion, she abandoned the plum role of Michael Corleone's daughter in The Godfather Part III. She continued her screen successes with well-received roles in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992 and The Age of Innocence in 1993. In 1990 Ryder was engaged to but did not marry actor-musician Johnny Depp.
