Actor. Born Ramon Estevez, on August 3, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio, to a Spanish immigrant father and Irish mother, the seventh child of a poor family of ten. Charismatic leading man of the American stage, screen and television. Directly out of high school he went to New York, where he began his acting career at the off-off-Broadway Living Theater, supplementing his income through such jobs as janitor, car washer, soda jerk and messenger. His big chance came in 1964 when he played a leading part in the Broadway production of "The Subject was Roses", a role he later repeated in the 1968 screen version. He later appeared frequently on TV (the title role in the "Execution of Private Slovik", among other lead parts) and made his big screen debut in 1967 as one of two punks terrorizing subway passengers in The Incident. He has since played leads in many other films, notably a superlative performance as an alienated youth on a killing spree in Terrence Malick's Badlands (1973), a role for which he was named best actor at the San Sebastian (Spain) Film Festival. Surviving a heart attacked during the grueling production of Apocalypse Now (1979), Sheen performed prolifically on TV as well as in feature films, appearing in numerous productions in leads and character roles. Having impersonated Robert Kennedy in the 1974 teleplay "The Missiles of October", he portrayed John F. Kennedy in the miniseries "Kennedy" (1983). He was seen in numerous TV movies, among them The Long Road Home (1981), for which he received an Emmy. Following some experience in TV, Sheen made his debut as a feature director with Cadence (1990). An activist for various causes, he was arrested many times for participating in anti-nuke demonstrations. He is the father of screen stars Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen. His son, Ramon, and daughter Renee, are also actors, as is his own brother, Joe Phelan.
