Actor. Born on March 31, 1943, in Astoria, Queens, New York. A baker's son, educated at Hofstra. Sensitive nervous-looking lead and supporting player of the American stage and screen. He won both a New York Film Critics Award and an Oscar as best supporting player for his performance in The Deer Hunter (1978). A character actor throughout the 80's and early 90's, effective in psychologically-charged roles.
